Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Rings

Choosing your wedding ring is probably the single most important decision you will make in planning your wedding. Here are the questions our customers ask most frequently, along with the advice we give them.

Do I need a custom ring?

Many brides ask this question because they have been unable to find a ring that seems to go with their engagement ring. The right jeweler will know if a ring that matches already exists, or if one can be made to match your engagement ring with a little modification.

Do our wedding rings have to match?

Many couples start out wanting to get matching rings. The problem with this is that women have feminine taste and men have masculine taste. It’s often hard for a couple to agree on a single style they both like. The worst thing is for a couple to compromise and choose a ring that neither really likes. Each of you should select what you really like and will want to wear for a lifetime.

My fiancee is rough on jewelry. What metal would be the best choice for his ring?

Platinum is one of the strongest and most durable metals in the world. It weighs 65% more than 14kt gold. It's ideal for jewelry worn every day because it exhibits little material loss, even after prolonged wear. However, it is more expensive, and if the budget does not permit, then 14kt gold is still an excellent choice. Another new metal for jewelry is titanium — which, although light in weight, is amazingly durable and more reasonable in price than gold.

How far in advance should we purchase our wedding rings?

It's never too early to order your wedding rings. There is so much to do in planning a wedding that anything you can accomplish early will be just that much less pressure as you get close to the wedding. Most jewelers offer a free layaway plan that enables you to purchase early and take your time paying for the rings. If you've chosen a custom wedding ring, you'll probably be worrying how it will turn out. By ordering early, you'll have that worry out of the way.

My engagement ring is wide. Can I move it to my right hand and wear my wedding ring on my
left hand?

There are no hard and fast rules; you should do what makes you most comfortable. Many people choose to do this, thus allowing them more flexibility in selecting their wedding ring.

Must the diamonds in my wedding ring be the exact same quality as the diamonds in my engagement ring?

Generally speaking, it's a good idea that the diamonds match; however, exceptions can be made. You should never get diamonds that are a better color than your center diamond, as it will make your center diamond look darker.

What are some of the more popular styles for men's wedding rings?

Platinum is the hot new thing for men, with either bright or brushed finish or a combination of the two. Many of the platinum rings have an 18kt yellow complementary design or rims. Men are also showing an interest in the ethnic or Celtic designed rings in various color combinations and finishes. And in almost all instances, men are seeking rings with a rounded inside, which is referred to as a "comfort-fit." Naturally, diamonds are still just right for the right man.
